The Health Benefits of High-Polyphenol Olive Oil

Extra virgin olive oil has a reputation as the healthy fat. The reputation is earned — and it is easy to buy a bottle that does not deserve it. The benefits that show up in trials are tied to extra virgin oil that still contains polyphenols: hydroxytyrosol, oleocanthal, oleuropein, tyrosol. Refined "light" oil is mostly oleic acid and a memory of a grove.

Heart

PREDIMED is the study most people mean when they say Mediterranean diet. Extra virgin olive oil, used daily in a real eating pattern, was associated with about a 30% drop in major cardiovascular events versus low-fat advice. Later work kept pointing at phenolic content and at less oxidation of LDL — the mechanism EFSA was willing to write down.

Inflammation

Oleocanthal is the peppery compound. It is also the one compared to ibuprofen in the lab. A daily habit of peppery EVOO is not a drug. It is a dietary source of a COX-inhibiting phenol you can taste. If the oil is mild, you are not getting much of it.

Brain (early, still moving)

Hydroxytyrosol and oleocanthal have been studied for effects on amyloid and oxidative stress in models. Human trials are thinner than the heart file. It is fair to say "promising" and unfair to say "prevents Alzheimer's." We would rather be boring and accurate.

The rest of the oil

Oleic acid, vitamin E, squalene — they matter. They are also in lesser grades. The reason to pay for extra virgin, and to pay for a fresh one, is the phenolic fraction that refining and age destroy.

How much, how often

The EFSA condition for the polyphenol claim is 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and derivatives per day. In practice that is a couple of tablespoons of a genuinely high-phenolic oil, or a lot of a weak one. We will not tell you Olivyra hits a milligram target until the lab does. Lab results are pending. The serving that matches the literature is still "use it as your main fat," not a drop on a salad once a week.

How to get a high-polyphenol oil

Olivyra is built on the first four. The fifth is in motion. When the independent panel comes back, we will publish it. Until then: high polyphenols (lab results pending).
